When people think of exercise, they usually think about going to the gym or a workout class. But many different forms of exercise contribute to your physical and mental health. You can focus on breathing or other methods, such as progressive muscle relaxation.
Just thinking can influence how your body feels. Whether you are experiencing something or simply imagining something, your body reacts. Mind and body exercises help decrease anxiety and pain, improve sleep quality, reduce recovery time from procedures, strengthen your immune system, and increase your sense of control and well-being.
Relaxation breathing practices are easy to incorporate into your daily routine. They don't take much time, and you can accomplish them at home or outside. An example of this practice has very few steps.
- Be aware of your current breathing pattern.
- Focus on your breath with one hand on your chest.
- Breathe through your nose.
- Focus on inflating your abdomen.
- Try to inhale for 3-4 seconds and exhale for 6-7 seconds.
- Eventually, stop counting and imagine releasing tension from your mind and body.
Progressive relaxation is a simple process that allows you to release tension from your body, which can help your mind relax. It decreases stress and anxiety, improves sleep, and helps with stomach aches, headaches, and other physical pain. It is essential to practice until you get this exercise right. Find a place without distractions and set aside at least 15 minutes.
- Start at your feet and work your way up to your face.
- Clench your body parts one at a time, and you will eventually reach the top. If you don't have as much time, focus on the parts of your body with the most tension.
- When you clench your muscles, hold for 1 minute, and as you release, exhale.
- Stay relaxed for about 15 seconds, then move on to the next muscle group.
Incorporating some of these exercises into your daily routine can benefit your mental and physical well-being. It is essential to take some time out of the day to focus on yourself to live your best life. Taking care of yourself isn't just about you. It also helps everyone around you. They can feed off of your positive energy, and you can ensure you treat yourself and everyone you love with respect and kindness.
