October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month
Breast Cancer Awareness Month is more than just a time to wear pink ribbons; it's a powerful movement that calls us to action, encouraging self-care and vigilance in the fight against breast cancer. This month, we turn our focus to the importance of self-exams, annual screenings, and the vital role of exercise in recovery and mental health.

A Personal Journey
My own story as a breast cancer survivor began in 2011 when I was diagnosed with Ductal Carcinoma In Situ (DCIS) in my right breast. Thanks to a contrast MRI, we caught it early—at stage 0—before any lump had formed. The call for a mastectomy came just as I was about to join my husband and young daughters for Thanksgiving. It was a moment of profound change, and while the road to recovery was challenging, it was also filled with learning and growth.
Why Awareness Matters
Awareness is the first step towards prevention and care. We urge everyone, women and men, especially those with a family history of breast cancer, to engage in self-care through regular exams and to stay informed about the latest research and support available.
The Healing Power of Exercise
Exercise isn't just about physical fitness; it's a crucial component of your mental health and well-being. After surgeries and treatments, staying active can enhance recovery, boost mood, and foster a sense of control and empowerment over your body.
How You Can Take Action
- Commit to an Active Lifestyle: Whether it’s a daily walk, yoga, or cycling, commit to moving each day to support both your physical and mental health.
- Stay Informed: Connect with breast cancer foundations and groups for up-to-date information and support.
- Schedule Your Screenings: Early detection saves lives. Make sure you're on top of your yearly exams, and encourage loved ones to do the same.
